Every nonprofit has to ask this question: How do we get the money we need to do the work that needs to be done? Many organizations rely heavily on philanthropy to make ends meet and fund new initiatives, whether a new program, a new hire or a new building.

But answering the question in this way leads to more questions: What methods do we use to raise funds (grants, annual giving, major donors, etc.)? Where do we find grants and donors? Who do we ask and who does the asking? Answering these questions requires a strategy specific to your organization, its needs, and its current assets.

But one thing remains constant: the importance of the Why, that is, your mission. All fundraising relies on communicating the importance of your mission by telling a story that will speak to the funder in question.
