Mission Statement
Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1977 by Church Women United. Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver hot, nutritious meals to the ill, aging, and convalescing residents of the Charlottesville/Albemarle area who find it difficult or impossible to prepare meals for themselves.
Overview
Meals on Wheels strives to improve the health and support the independence and dignity of our homebound neighbors. We currently have an active volunteer force of over 400 and serve meals to approximately 275 clients in Charlottesville and the county of Albemarle.
Meals are prepared under the supervision of a registered dietitian, and each client's dietary needs are met. Medically appropriate diets include diabetic, renal, sodium-restricted, heart-healthy, vegetarian, and soft or pureed food.
Meals on Wheels provides a source of daily social contact for people who would otherwise be alone. It also allows for earlier release from hospitals and long-term care facilities and helps keep elderly and disabled persons out of institutions altogether. It can help older married couples remain together and allow many people to live in their homes for extended periods. Because volunteers check on meal recipients daily, people living alone can feel safe, knowing that someone would notice if anything were to happen to them.
