Desired skills, perspectives, experiences, and characteristics of new board members

Central Virginia Community Justice is a new nonprofit providing restorative justice services in Charlottesville & Albemarle. We facilitate processes that allow those who have been impacted by harm to ask for what they need from the person who caused the harm, and to allow the person who caused the harm to make amends in a meaningful way.

CVCJ has a non-hierarchical organization structure which gives voice to all members of our staff and circles. Community members who join a CVCJ Circle will be part of consensus-based decision making processes, working together with staff to make the organization as strong and effective as possible.

CVCJ currently has 2 Circles accepting members:

  • Finance Circle: help CVCJ create and manage our annual budget and attend to other finance-related needs. Help create and implement a fundraising plan for the year. Cultivate relationships with private donors. Desired characteristics: detail-oriented, reliable, financial expertise, fundraising experience.
  • Event & Fundraising Circle: help plan, promote, and execute events that support CVCJ’s mission. Support CVCJ’s fundraising initiatives. Attend community events on behalf of CVCJ. Desired characteristics: reliable, energetic, community-oriented, fundraising experience, event planning experience.

While we welcome circle members with relevant experience, the most important characteristic is a belief in the services we provide and a desire to help. Above all, we are looking for Circle members who live our core values: Dignity, Honesty, Interconnection, Action, and Healing.

Annual Time Commitment (including committee meetings, special events, work outside the board, etc.)

Both circles will meet as needed based on the decision of the members. Meetings will generally occur monthly, though some months there may be more or fewer meetings depending on the needs of the organization. Each circle will decide whether meetings will occur in person or online.

For members of the Event & Fundraising Circle, attendance at occasional CVCJ and community events will be requested. These events may occur after business hours or on weekends.
