Desired skills, perspectives, experiences, and characteristics of new board members

We’re looking for creative, collaborative doers. Sustainability Matters is a young, rapidly growing environmental nonprofit, with a focus on reaching non-traditional audiences. We bring sustainability to unexpected places, and we’re about people as much as we’re about the planet. Our current in-person footprint stretches from the Northern & Central Shenandoah Valley through the Northern Piedmont into the DC suburbs of Northern Virginia. Our webinars reach global audiences, and our flagship project, Making Trash Bloom (planting pollinator meadows at landfills), has attracted national interest and national funders.

Our board members share our high standards, ambition, far-outside-the-box thinking…and sense of fun! They’re Sustainability Matters’ foremost ambassadors, and as in most nonprofits, must also be our foremost fundraisers. We’re particularly interested in adding board members from our newest geographical areas (the Piedmont and NoVA), but would welcome the right people from any geography. Prior experience on nonprofit boards isn’t necessary, but experience scaling up organizations – nonprofit or for-profit – is deeply desirable.

Annual Time Commitment (including committee meetings, special events, work outside the board, etc.)

A minimum of 60 hours, preferably more. We want board members for whom Sustainability Matters is a personal priority and a passion. Some of our board are also active program volunteers; others are brainstormers, sounding boards, and bridge builders.
