Think about a time that you relocated or started a new job — what do you wish you had known? Who or what helped you to settle in and begin? CNE had the chance to sit down with a number of Charlottesville area community leaders — some who have been in their positions for years and others who are stepping into a fresh role. Two things stood out as keys for success, no matter the length of time someone has held a position: a strong network and access to resources.
The word “networking” can evoke eye rolls from even the most extroverted professionals, but those same folks appreciate the value in having a group of trusted colleagues and peers in their corner. Remember to:
- build a cadre of people who know and understand you, your work, and your goals
- develop a clear expectation of confidentiality in order to talk openly
- ask for assistance when you need it
- share resources that you discover to make relationships mutually beneficial
Resources can seem scarce in the nonprofit sector, so knowing where to look is important. Before you recreate the wheel, look to:
- your coworkers
- mentors (whom are an important part of your network)
- professional associations that are specific to your role within the field
- webinars and in-person trainings
