CNE LAUNCHES MAJOR NEW LEARNING SERIES WITH FREE WEBINAR FOCUSING ON AFRICAN AMERICAN PHILANTHROPY
Nationally Renowned Speaker Dr. Tyrone Freeman to Lead the August 31 Virtual Session
CNE is launching its 7 Actionable Principles Learning Series and culminating its recognition of Black Philanthropy Month by hosting nationally renowned speaker Dr. Tyrone Freeman as he presents a webinar titled Changing the Face of Philanthropy: What Black Philanthropy Teaches Us about Generosity on Tuesday, August 31, from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm.
The webinar, facilitated by local non-profit leader Dr. Jaronda Miller-Bryant, will focus on the deep history and culture of African American philanthropy in the United States, sharing important features of African American philanthropy from the past and present that will enable practitioners to understand the versatility and impact of this community’s generosity on the country.

Tyrone McKinley Freeman is an award-winning scholar, former fundraiser, and author of Madam C.J. Walker’s Gospel of Giving: Black Women’s Philanthropy during Jim Crow. His work examines the intersections of philanthropy, activism, and race in America. A nationally recognized expert in African American philanthropy, he writes and speaks about various forms of Black generosity and social change, past and present. Currently, he is an assistant professor of philanthropic studies at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.
“My work is all about helping people of color reconnect with their deep and rich philanthropic heritage to maximize their impact today, and helping the larger nonprofit and philanthropic sectors sustain inclusion in their community engagement and social change strategies,” said Freeman in discussing his webinar.
Participants will hear a presentation and engage in a Q&A session and facilitated breakout groups to develop cultural competencies for relationship-building with donors of color by:
- Examining the historical traditions of generosity by African Americans
- Identifying characteristics and platforms of gift-giving within African American philanthropy today
- Defining philanthropy inclusively to value and engage donors of color on their own terms
