Eight Myths of US Philanthropy

In their 2008 book, Understanding Philanthropy: Its Meaning and Mission, Robert Payton and Michael Moody define philanthropy as “voluntary action for the public good.” By this definition, almost everyone has engaged in philanthropy. But one of the biggest myths about philanthropy is that it only refers to the giving of enormous sums of money by wealthy donors—the bigger the better.
