Each fall CNE hosts Philanthropy Day as a way to bring together a diverse audience to celebrate, educate and motivate stakeholders from the nonprofit sector.
This year we are honored to welcome Maurice A. Jones to Charlottesville on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 as our Philanthropy Day keynote speaker. As the President & CEO of Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Jones works every day to support healthy, thriving communities and catalyze economic opportunities for all.
Maurice was raised by his grandparents on a tobacco and corn farm in rural southern Virginia and is still very deeply rooted in work at the local level to make our communities safe, thriving, and welcoming for all. Upon taking the helm at LISC, Maurice stated, “In many ways, coming to LISC brings me full-circle. I vividly remember, as a child, watching my grandparents working themselves to the bone so I could have a better life. Now I feel blessed to be in the position of creating opportunities for a new generation.”
In the early 80s Douglas Freeman realized the need for an event to thank major donors for the opportunities they created and later succeeded in having President Ronald Reagan declare November 15 as National Philanthropy Day. We know the importance of thanking all of the stakeholders who donate their time and treasure to the nonprofit sector; they make our communities stronger.
Maurice has spent his extensive career as one of those stakeholders. Whether in the philanthropic, private, or government sector, his depth of experience—and his ties to Charlottesville and UVa.—gives him unique insight into what this area wants to achieve and what it has to offer for all of its residents.
We hope you’ll join us in November as Maurice helps us to celebrate, educate, and motivate in the name of stronger communities. Please contact Aleen Carey at acarey@thecne.org for information about sponsorship opportunities.
